A great misconception for many people is that there is plenty of water for everyone. Unfortunately, almost 97% of our planet's water is too salty for drinking or growing crops. Most fresh water is either deep underground or in polar icecaps.

Furthermore, fresh water is not evenly distributed. It must sometimes be moved to where it is needed, stored for future use, and cleaned when it is too dirty to drink.

Wars have been fought over water use and quality, and scientific predictions indicate more of the same—and worse. Over 2 billion people in the Third World either lack access to water, or suffer severe health problems due to unsanitary conditions and unacceptable levels of pollutants.

While the developed countries enjoy expensive water treatment systems, many offer drinking water no better than that of the Ancient Roman Empire. Many areas in the world feature water permeated by arsenic, nitrates and nitrites, bacteria, and chemical pollutants so vile as to beggar description.

The cost of water—clean water—worldwide, is enormous. But to refuse the bill, and to thus eschew the human need for clean, pure water, is to condemn a people to early death, disease, and untold misery.
